It's difficult to afford a good education when college tuition is increasing every single year. Without help, outrageous costs can exclude some people from the learning opportunities they deserve. Scholarships increase the accessibility of education for those in need and provide families around the world with a brighter future.
Scholarships are extremely beneficial for students because, unlike loans, they never have to be paid back. Plus, expenses for college such as textbooks and technology fees add extra financial burden on top of tuition. Scholarships can help lighten the load.
Once students don't have to worry about money, they can spend more time focusing on their studies. Without a scholarship, a lot of people are forced to work full- or part-time to pay for school, and that responsibility takes energy and time away from education.
The Western Union Foundation offers aid to immigrant and migrant families through its Family Scholarship program. Money goes to two family members each year and helps pay for college tuition, language acquisition, technical training and GED classes. So far, the foundation has helped families with over $1 million in scholarships. Two of last year's recipients were Roberto and Clelia, a mother and son from Nicaragua who are currently living in Miami.
We want to help people move up the economic ladder through education. Applicants have to be 18 or older and members of the same family. Additionally, they must have been born outside the United States but been in the country for seven years or less.
If you know someone who would benefit from this program, encourage them to apply. The process is free and really simple. You can also make a difference by donating to the foundation. Join Western Union in moving money for better education!
